Department of Political Science and Public Administration

The Department of Political Science and Public Administration was established in 2002 as Department of Public Administration at the inception of Adamawa State University, Mubi. The Department was conceived to run programmes that are designed to meet the manpower needs of Adamawa State, Nigeria and the international community.

Philosophy
The Department’s philosophy is in line with that of Adamawa State University which is meeting the manpower requirements of the State and beyond. It is also in conformity with that of the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the nation and that of the International Association of Schools and Institutes of Administration (IASIA).
The Department operates using an interdisciplinary approach designed to produce graduates with the relevant knowledge, skills and values that are beneficial to the host community, the nation as well as the international community. As obtained elsewhere, the Department’s bachelor and graduate programmes are designed to equip the graduates with qualitative and analytical skills geared towards the improvement of their socio-political environment, decision making and policy implementation processes. In addition to making the graduates highly enterprising and self reliant, the programmes will also enable them to keep track with and appreciate new trends in information technology and globalization.

Objectives
Among others, the objectives of the Department include the following:
(i) To produce competent graduates with relevant skills, knowledge and values in Political Science and Public Administration
(ii) To pursue learning and research in all its programmes
(iii) To design and produce dynamic programmes that meet the socio-political and unique contemporary organizational challenges in both the public and private sectors.
(iv) To inculcate in graduates, the value of integrity, honesty, transparency, prudence and accountability in the management of both public and private organizations.
(v) To embark on and sustain community service and development through viable projects and programmes.

Academic Programmes
From its inception in 2002 to 2008, the Department was primarily running a Bachelor of Science (B. Sc) degree in Public Administration which is fully accreditated with the NUC. However, in response to the manpower needs of the host community as well as the yearnings and aspirations of its prospective candidates, the Department has expanded its academic programmes beginning from the 2009/2010 session to include the following:
(i) A Bachelor of Science (B. Sc) degree in Political Science at the undergraduate level
(ii) A Post-Graduate Diploma in Public Administration
(iii) A Masters in Public Administration (MPA) programmes
(iv) A Master of Science (M. Sc) degree in Public Administration
(v) A Ph. D in Public Administration

While the first four programmes are currently being run by the Department as approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC), the Departemnt has decided to commence the Ph.D programme by 2010/2011 session when most of the senior academic staff on study fellowships will be back.
